Cook's surveying was very accurate and his maps were used for- about 150 years!
- From 1768-1771 Cook had his first voyage.
- In 1772-1775 Cook had his second voyage.
- 1773 Cook discovered Cook Islands.
- 1773 also the first to cross the Antarctica Circle.
- 1774 Cook charted;New Hibrides, Marques, Easter Island and discovered many Pacific Islands.
- 1776 Chief astronomer on a voyage to find a Northwest passage between Atlantic and Pacific Ocean North of North America. First, Cook revisited Mid Pacific discovering and charting some present day Hawaiian Islands He never found the Northwest passage.
- 1778 Cook made his third voyage to the Pacific. He continued to New Zealand charting 3860 km. of coastline. He also discovered the East coast of Australia claiming it for Great Britain as New South Wales.
Captain james Cook visited the Hawaiian islands in 1778. When he came ashore, the people mistook him for one of their gods. This illustration shows the Hawaiians offering gifts to the English captain.
