James Cook

Early Life

James Cook was a British explorer and cratographer.


Back to the time of 27 October 1728. James Cook was born in the village of Martonin North Yorkshire. James was one of the five children in family.Cook was the son of a farm labourer.Later Cook and his family moved to Ayton where he attended school.In 1774 Cook went to work in a shop in Saithes but he was very unhappy. At the age of 17 he worked for a ship owner here he learned about boating and the sea.

In 1775 Cook joined the Royal Navy as a regular seaman and was sent to North America on the ship Eagle. He worked his way up the Navy and finally became commander of his own survey vessel.

("This was very extra because regular people did not usually become ship commander in the British Navy.")

Cook married Elizabeth Batts (1742-1835), the daughter of Samuel Batts .

They had six children.( son and daugther )
